Using principles and techniques employed by the founding company in Germany, Behr Industries adheres to high-quality standards in all phases of production in the U.S. It is the only U.S.-based full service wood component supplier. Located near many of the assembly plants of the automakers with production facilities in North America, operations are organized to be on the cutting edge of the production and aesthetic enhancement of wood trim automotive components. Standards of ISO/TS 16949 and ISO14001 have been met, along with certifications as a Ford Q1 and GM Certified and Accredited Lab operation
Production processes
Aimed at maintaining the elegance and individuality of fine wood veneers, Behr production involves premium face veneers only. Through dedicated work cells, each product's phases are maintained throughout the duration of the program, thus encouraging the fine-tuning of quality and efficiency. All phases of the programs get full attention: design, testing, prototyping and production. Parts are certified and tested daily.
Only the finest veneers are selected, then pre-cut and die-cut. Face veneers are bonded to other veneers (as many as 20 veneer or aluminum underlays), leaving an end product stronger than a solid piece of wood. Parts are then trimmed by press operations with multi-spindle routers used when needed.
Sanding to smooth surfaces takes place prior to the application of stains, followed by hand touch-up (if needed, to fill pits, sand bumps and enhance grain patterns). Sealers are applied, parts are cured and emblems are positioned before a top coat of polyester or polyurethane is put on. Final hand-buffing for a high-gloss effect takes place prior to component assembly.
Wood grains utilized
A tropical veneer, usually from South America, with a deep ruddy brown coloring and black grain.
A temperate veneer with light tan coloring, fine-textured, with small, slightly-darkened figures.
Usually from European continent, dark brown in color with highly-marked uneven grain and cloudy swirls.
From central Africa, reddish-tan in coloring with a lustrous surface and highly defined grain pattern.
